Portrait Photography Styles

absolutely stunning head shot in black and white of a young girl wearing a knitted hat gazing straight up highlighting photography styles

I create two main portrait photo sessions. The studio shoot usually shot on a seamless backdrop with and without props and the.. location portrait placing the subject in their natural surroundings. I usually find many variations in a single session.

My Top 10 Budding Portrait Photographer Tips

  1. Make your model comfortable. First and most important rule of portrait photography.
  2. Shoot from slightly below your subjects eye line, this can be very flattering for most people wether standing or sitting.
  3. Similarly light from slightly below your subject than above where possible
  4. Play with different backgrounds, your subject in the portrait is the main point of interest but different backgrounds can alter the overall effect of your photo.
  5. Framing your subject can give your photo depth. A window, doorway or even just framing the sitters face with their hands draws your eyes to the point of interest in your portrait.
  6. Sometimes it can be the subjects expressions that can make the perfect shot. Play around with different expressions and emotions but always remember to keep it fun.
  7. Nerves can ruin a shot, give your client something to hold. By having something to hold people are instantly more relaxed.
  8. Distract your subject. It doesn't matter if you do it by chatting about something they're interested in or if you have to make a fool out of yourself, REMEMBER a relaxed subject results in great photos.
  9. Tilting the chin slightly or turning the head are just two of the things you can do to make your photos more interesting.
  10. Never be afraid to experiment, apply creativity and keep shooting.
